என்ன, “வெயிட்டான கை”யை எதிர்பார்த்தீர்களா? ஏப்ரல் ஃபூல்!

பள்ளிநாட்கள் நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றன. யாராவது ஒரு பிரமுகர் பள்ளிக்கு வருகை தந்திருப்பார். சுட்டெரிக்கும் வெய்யிலில் கட்டாந்தரையில் வேர்த்து விறுவிறுத்து உட்கார்ந்திருப்போம். நிழலில், ஒரு கோப்பையில் ஜூஸை பக்கத்தில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு, பிரமுகர் மைக் பிடிப்பார். ‘உங்கள் பள்ளி முதல்வர் என்னை இங்கு பேச அழைத்த போது, நான் யோசித்தேன் – என்னை எதற்காக அழைக்கிறார்கள், நான் அப்படி என்ன செய்து விட்டேன்?…’ (Pause – உட்கார்ந்திருக்கும் பள்ளி முதல்வரைத் திரும்பி ஒரூ பார்வை – அவரது சமாளியிளிப்பு) ‘உண்மையிலேயே எனக்கு இதற்கெல்லாம் தகுதி இருக்கிறதா?’ (இன்னொரு பார்வை, ஒரு நமுட்டுச் சிரிப்பு). இப்படிப் பேச ஆரம்பித்து விட்டு, தனது வாழ்க்கைக் கதையைச் சொல்லி எப்படித் தனக்கு அந்தத் தகுதி வந்தது என்று பிரலாபிப்பார்.

இப்படிப் வந்து பேசியவர்களில் ஒருவராவது, ‘உண்மையிலேயே எனக்கு இத்தகைய மாணவர் கூட்டத்தில் பேச எந்தத் தகுதியும் கிடையாது. உங்கள் பள்ளி முதல்வருக்கு என்னிடம் ஏதோ காரியம் ஆக வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன், என்னவென்று தெரியவில்லை. நினைத்தால் பயமாக இருக்கிறது’ என்று சொல்லியிருந்தால், நூற்றுக்கணக்கான மாணவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை நல்லபடியாக திசை மாறியிருக்கும்.

இணையத்தில் தமிழர்கள் ஊடாட ஏது செய்யும் தொழில்நுட்பங்களில் வலைப்பதிவுகள் மூன்றாவது தலைமுறை. Third time is the charm, என்று சொல்வார்கள், இருக்கலாம். இதற்கு முன்னல் இருந்த தொழில்நுட்பங்களில் இருந்த முக்கியமான இரண்டு குறைபாடுகள் இதில் இல்லை.

முதல் குறைபாடு ஒற்றையோடைத் தன்மை. ஆரம்பத்தில் இருந்த செய்திக்குழுக்களில் இந்தப் பிரச்னை இருந்தது. எல்லாருடைய எழுத்துக்களும் ஒரே வரிசையில் பதிவாகி, கிட்டத்தட்ட அதே வரிசையில்தான் படிக்கப்பட வேண்டியிருந்தது. இதனால், கருத்துத் தீவிரவாதிகளால் மிகச் சுலபமாய் இவை கடத்தப்பட்டன. ஒரு நாள் காலை வந்து பார்த்தால் இலங்கை அரசுக்கு ஆதரவாய் இருநூறு கட்டுரைகள் வழிமறித்துக் கொண்டு நிற்கும். அந்தக் கடலில் மூழ்கி முத்தெடுப்பதற்குள் மூச்சு முட்டி விடும்.

இரண்டாவது வந்த மட்டுறுத்தப்பட்ட மின்மடற் குழுக்கள் மற்றும் இணைய குழுமங்களிலும் இந்த ஒற்றையோடைத் தன்மை இருந்தாலும், இந்தப் பிரச்னைக்கு சில தீர்வுகள் இருந்தன. ஒன்று, இது போன்ற குழுக்களை உருவாக்குவது சுலபம், இரண்டாவது, பிரச்னை செய்யும் நபர்களை வெளியேற்றுவதும் சுலபம். இவைகளால், இக்குழுக்களின் விவாதங்கள் அதிகம் திசை மாறவில்லை. ஆனால், இவை பயனர்களின் மின்னஞ்சல் பெட்டிகளைக் குத்தகைக்கு எடுத்துக் கொண்டன. வங்கியிலிருந்து வந்த எச்சரிக்கைத் தபால், நண்பர்களிடமிருந்து வந்த எசகுபிசகான ஜோக், கரண்ட் பில், வயாக்ரா விளம்பரங்கள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கிடையில், ஞானக்கூத்தனின் இலக்கியத் தடம் என்று ஒரு மடல் தட்டுப்படும். சத்தியமாய் படிக்கத் தோன்றாது. ஒன்றைப் படிக்காவிட்டால், அதைத் தொடர்ந்து வரும் விவாத அஞ்சல்களில் பங்கு பெறத் தோன்றாது. சீக்கிரமே இவை எனக்கு சலித்துப் போயின. இன்றைக்கு வலைப்பதிவுகள் எட்டியிருக்கும் பிராபல்யத்திற்கு நிகராக அவை பிரபலம் அடையாததற்கு இதுவே காரணம் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். அதே சமயம், இவ்வளவு சிரமத்துக்கிடையிலும் வெற்றிகரமாய் இயங்கி வரும் ராயர் காப்பி கிளப், மரத்தடி போன்ற குழுக்களுக்குத் குல்லா கழற்றுகிறேன்.

வலைப்பதிவுகளில் இந்தப் பிரச்னைகள் இல்லை – வாசகர்கள் வேண்டும் போது, வேண்டியதை வசதியாகப் படிக்கிறார்கள். எழுதுபவர்கள் எப்பொழுது வேண்டுமானாலும், எதைப்பற்றி வேண்டுமானாலும் எழுதலாம் என்ற சுதந்திரத்தோடு எழுதுகிறார்கள். நடக்கும் விவாதங்களும் மட்டுறுத்தலால் கட்டுக்குள் வந்திருக்கின்றன. ஆதலால், தமிழ்கூறும் நல்லுலகத்தில் வலைப்பதிவுகளுக்குக் கொஞ்சம் சாஸ்வதமான இடமிருக்கும் என்றுதான் தோன்றுகிறது.

இங்கேயும் ஒரு பிரச்னை இருக்கிறதென்றால் அது இந்த நூற்றுக்கணக்கான வலைப்பதிவகங்களின் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பதிவுகளில் எதைப் படிப்பது, எதை விடுப்பது என்று முடிவு செய்வதுதான். An embarassment of riches and a good problem to have, என்றாலும் பிரச்னைதான். இந்தப் பிரச்னையைத் தீர்ப்பதற்கு இயந்திர தந்திர உபாயங்களெல்லாம் பலிக்கவில்லை என்றுதான் நினைக்கிறேன். தமிழ்மணம் நல்ல நோக்கங்களுடனே துவங்கிய நட்சத்திரப் பரிந்துரை முறை ஒரு உதாரணம். யார் எப்படி ஓட்டுப் போடுகிறார்கள் என்பதற்கு என்ன காரணம் – நல்ல பதிவு என்பதாலா, கருத்துடன் ஒத்துப் போவதாலா, எழுதியவரைப் பிடிக்காது என்பதாலா, எல்லாம் சரி, ஆனால் நடுவில் ஒரு வார்த்தை சரியில்லை என்பதாலா, இல்லை விரல் தடுக்கி சுட்டி வழுக்கியதாலா என்று தெரியாது. இதனால், படிக்க வேண்டிய பதிவுகளை அடையாளம் காட்டுவதில் இந்த முறை பயனற்று இருக்கிறது.

தேன்கூடு நடத்தும் “அதிகம் வாசிக்கப்பட்ட பதிவுகளும்” அதிகம் பயனில்லை. ஒரு பதிவில் சுட்டியைத் தட்டும் எவரும் அதில் என்ன இருக்கிறது என்று தெரிந்து கொண்டு தட்டுவதில்லை. தலைப்பைப் பார்த்து, ஒரு யூகமாக சொடுக்குகிறார்கள். நாளையே நீங்கள், “ரஜினி வீட்டில் சோ-ஜெயலலிதா ரகசிய சந்திப்பு” என்று தலைப்பு போட்டு விட்டு, உள்ளுக்குள் “இப்படி ஒரு செய்தி வந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று யோசித்துப் பார்க்கிறேன்” என்று எழுதி வையுங்கள், உங்கள் பதிவுதான் டாப்.

பதிவுகளின் திரட்டிகள் என்ற முறையில் இரண்டு தளங்களும் சிறப்பாக செயல்பட்டாலும், எதைப்படிப்பது என்பதை அறியத்தருவதில், இவைகளைக் காட்டிலும் தனி மனிதர்களின் தேர்வை நம்புவதே உசிதம் என்று நம்புகிறேன். கில்லி போன்ற தளங்களின் தேவையும் வெற்றியும் இதில் தான் இருக்கிறது. கில்லியில் அன்றாடம் வரும் பத்து சொச்சம் பதிவுகளில் நான்கைந்து படித்தால் கூட நல்ல/சுவையான/பயனுள்ள பதிவுகளைப் படித்த திருப்தி இருக்கிறது. இதற்காக பிரகாஷ், பாலா இன்ன பிறருக்கு எத்தனை நன்றி சொன்னாலும் தகும்.

This week’s sign of the apocalypse Bubble 2.0: Facebook, where college students around the world socialize, turned down a $750 million offer and is angling for $2 billion, according to Businessweek Online. To think Rupert Murdoch snagged the much larger MySpace for just $580 million; Facebook would cost $285/student. Russell BeatieNotebook says it’s a non-story; they’ve been on the block for awhile and the $2 billion number is hearsay and media manipulation. TechCrunch thinks Facebook executives are just seeing how high a number analysts think is ridiculous —and it’s higher than $2 billion. It’s too late, says Om Malik, they should have taken the $750 mil—just take a look at their cratering Alexa stats. Plus they may open the network to non-student users—and get spanked by MySpace.

Apple Computer is turning 30 and Kottke links to Steve Jobs’ best quotes ever. But the Beatles’ Apple record label is ticked about iTunes, saying it violates a 1991 agreement by Apple Computer to not sell music—and is suing because they can’t just let it be (via eWeek Technology News). Meanwhile, Apple iPhone rumors are swirling; “reliable” mock-up photos of an iPod-ish cell are making the rounds, but business2blog says that’s because Business 2.0 magazine commissioned them in 2005! Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer hints Redmond will have its own iPod/cell combo, possibly in a year. Ballmer also says he doesn’t own an iPod, and won’t let his kids have one—and they can’t use Google either.

Web 2.0 shorts: Zillow will soon have competition from Internet Brands’ RealEstateABC.com, which lets users adjust property values and adds detail on comparables, blogs TechCrunch. Plaxo’s CEO wrote a public apology for the company’s acquaintance spam. Red Herring and Silicon Beat report that Luxembourg-based Jajah may out-skype Skype with a new no-software VOIP phone service. And Second Life, an online virtual world, has grown to 165,000 residents and an economy estimated at $60 million annually, which explains how creator Linden Labs just raised $11 million in real money from VCs including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. It’s more than a game, it’s an operating system, says Scobleizer: You can store files, script using an in-game API, even build a fountain that spits blood.

After getting slagged over the weekend, Micro Persuasion’s Steve Rubel revisited the Dale Carnegie classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, and turns Carnegie’s lessons into a high-road approach to blogging for influence. Meanwhile, infOpinions calls Rubel’s attacker a cowardly, anonymous one-hit wonder.

On the Google beat, the search giant seems to be flying the classic start-up trajectory: Scorn Wall Street, Washington and “evil,” then start compromising as your profits attract predators. Paidcontent.org catalogs Mountain View’s latest moral descent as it gets into big-time D.C. lobbying. You might get some insight into what the Ph.D.-heavy search giant is thinking by checking out Google Tech Talks, a series of free Google Video presentations ranging from collecting Antarctic meteorites to high-end scientific visualization at NASA (via Ars Technica). Or you might get some insight into what ambulance chasers and mortgage brokers are thinking by checking out the top 10 Google keywords on BoingBoing. Good news: mesothelioma lawyers only sets you back $54.33 a pop.

In politics, an exhausted-looking Andrew Card resigned as White House chief of staff; Bush’s Office of Management and Budget director Joshua Bolten will take over. Maybe fallout over warrantless spying pushed Card to quit, speculates Daily Kos. Card’s not enough, blogs Huffington Post; Rumsfeld, Rove and Cheney remain. Wonkette wonders if White House counsel Dan Bartlett or White House spokesman Scott McClellan might be next. Shaking up White House staff only reinforces claims critics make about the administration, blogs Power Line. Still, Bolten did well at OMB as a voice of fiscal discipline, and may be the new blood the White House needs, blogs RedState.

And hundreds of thousands of students and workers nationwide protested immigration bills being considered by Congress. When L.A. mayor Villaraigosa told students to head back to class, the kids shouted “hell no, we won’t go,” blogs Townhall.com. No one’s going to sympathize with protesters who raise a Mexican flag over an upside-down U.S. flag, blogs Wizbang.
