Of the 28 feature films that I have acted in, 12 are disdainfully called “regional films”. For me doing a Kannathil Muthamittal in Tamil or an Aamar Bhuvan in Bengali were just as fulfilling, if not more so, than doing a film in Hindi. Actually let me correct myself, why am I even comparing? A Tamil or a Bengali film for me is no less or more than a film in Hindi or English. The criteria to choose a film remain the same, irrespective of the language. It is invariably the script, the director and the role, probably in that order! And sometimes it could simply be the director’s integrity and passion that is endearing and refreshing enough to take the plunge! …

…Since yesterday evening I have been very disturbed. Sadly such bombings are not outside our realm of imagination any more. So more than shock, I felt a deep sense of sadness and helplessness. I saw on the TV how so many innocent people were bleeding, sobbing and running in panic. The media, who brings it all to us, was often making it look like fiction with its dramatic commentary and with camera zooming into people’s wounds and distraught faces. I switched it off as I could take it no more. Maybe I didnt want to deal with the contradictions of life. Forget anaysis, I just didnt want to see it any more. It was too disturbing.

As we had to go for dinner to a friends place, we debated if we should and finally decided we will. There it was nice with all the diyas (lamps) and good food etc. People talked about the bomb blast and after expressing their sadness exchanged notes about the roads being empty and how they didn’t have to face the Diwali traffic! Then the conversations moved onto other things, as if it was business as usual.

What is scary is that we are getting used to violence and taking refuge in intellectual analysis and arguments. We are becoming violent ourselves by constantly pointing fingers at others and adding to the collective violence. We are making gross generalisations and interpreting things to suit our point of you. The reality is that people are suffering all over the world, all around us. These are people who have never really had a say in anything.

By reducing the discussion to communities and religion, we are forgetting that we are talking about millions of individuals. Each one equally precious. In every community there are women, old people, children and also men who are out there struggling to just survive. They are the biggest victims of all our hatred and prejudice. Lets strongly condemn all forms of violence and try and “be the change that we want to see in the world”.

Pinjamandhai is situated high in the hills, and the journey took 4 1/2 hours by 4×4 vehicle, a luxury we won’t have from now onwards. We will have to take a bus for 2 hours and hike for 3 hours to reach the village. There are no surfaced roads to the village – the closest one ends about 30km away.

What is growing in AIADMK rule is not people’s incomes, but the death toll. On an average, at least five persons die every day in road accidents here. Fifty persons were killed in a stampede during flood relief distribution. According to newspaper reports, murder and robbery have increased. Policemen themselves have become perpetrators of crime. What is happening here is police raj. Lots of people have gone missing. Three years back former MLA Balan disappeared while he was taking a walk.

In the 1929 self-respect conference organised by Periyar, he had a resolution passed which demanded right to property for women. My government implemented the resolution in 1989. We introduced financial assistance scheme for the marriage of poor women. Jayalalithaa scrapped it. Even in my films I have spoken up for women’s emancipation.
