Subject: Dishaa Update

Here are the latest updates from Dishaa and Dishaa Charitable Trust (DCT).

Suresh and Srivatsa Srinivasan (Vatsa) visited some of our projects in June. Here is a brief synopsis from their visit.

Day 1 – Along with principal Mr.Sivanandan, we met with students and their parents individually and spoke to them about their performance in the 10th standard board exams, their future aspirations etc. We also conducted the scholarship selection for the current academic year (2010-11).

Day 2 – We visited Gnanadeepam in the morning. The new school building, which was built last year, has been painted by the mentally challenged kids and it was an awesome sight to see the transformation. Please click the following link for photos of the school.

We visited Aalpha Primary school in the afternoon and spent a few hours with the Principal Mr.Kamala Kannan and the students sponsored by DCT. Please click the following link for photos from the visit.

In the evening we visited Sri Arunodayam. This was our first visit to the orphanage and we were moved by the sight of these young abandoned kids. Mr.Iyyappan and his team are doing a tremendous job in taking care of these kids. Mr.Iyyappan also showed us the new building that is being constructed in Kolathur. There is a dire need for clothes for these young kids aged 1 to 14. If you are in the DC area and wish to donate clothes, please contact Suresh (suresh@dishaa.org or at 410-702-5690) to arrange for pick up. Please click the following link for photos from the visit.

Day 3 – We, along with Mr.Sundaram (DCT coordinator), visited PV Selvaraj Girls Higher Secondary school in Tanjore. Eight academically and financially deserving girls who just completed their 10th exams were selected for continuing their higher education. We have also promised to raise funds and complete the second floor of the school. Construction is currently at a standstill due to non availability of funds. As a result, 6-8 classes are being conducted in rooms with asbestos roofs. Please click the following link for photos from the visit.

Day 4 – We also visited Annai Arts College in Kumbakonam. We met with the 11 students who are currently being sponsored by Dishaa Trust, for their under graduate degree program. We also met with the Director of the newly started Annai Engineering College. On her recommendation, scholarship has been granted to one deserving girl for her entire four year Engineering program. Dishaa will also be conducting a one day career counseling seminar for the students and lecturers at Annai Engineering in summer of 2011.

As always, nothing will be possible without your support. Please keep us in mind when you decide on your donations this year. Every dollar goes a long way in supporting our projects.
